Mi Ding, a creative journeywoman, weaves together the threads of artistic ingenuity, crafting narratives that illuminate the intersection of humans and their environment. Originating from the vibrant tapestry of China, her journey led her to refine her skills at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in the United Kingdom.
Imbued with a passion for innovation, Mi’s artistic exploration traverses realms both terrestrial and ethereal. From the concrete jungles of spatial exploration to the ephemeral landscapes of immersive installations and animations, she paints with the palette of possibility, envisioning a world where art dances in harmonious cadence.
At the heart of Mi’s creative pursuit lies a profound commitment to community and connection. Through immersive experiences, she catalyses conversations that transcend borders, fostering empathy and understanding across diverse landscapes.
Guided by sustainability and resourcefulness, Mi’s artistic practice embodies a spirit of democratization, transforming everyday materials into vessels of expression and change. Whether using recycled plastics, repurposed cardboard, or other innovative mediums, she invites audiences to reimagine their relationship with the world, showcasing creativity’s power in fostering environmental consciousness and societal change.
As an interdisciplinary artist, Mi’s work serves as a bridge between disciplines, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of discovery where art and community converge. With each creation, she ignites sparks of inspiration, forging connections that transcend boundaries and illuminate the shared journey of humanity.
As a resident artist at the Centre for Print Research, Mi is enthusiastic about expanding her exploration of art’s transformative potential within printmaking. Through collaborative projects and innovative experimentation, she aims to push the boundaries of traditional print techniques, offering fresh perspectives and insights into the intersection of art, research, and innovation. In today’s digital age, Mi seeks to restore appreciation for print media by creating 3D sculptures that challenge the misconception of print as static. Through innovative folding techniques, she showcases the tactile and immersive qualities of paper, inviting viewers to explore print in a new light.

Edition Title: Stellaris: Shaping Colour and Light through Folding
Edition Description:
Stellaris redefines the possibilities of color, light, and structure through intricate folding and gradient spectrum printing on deep black Plike paper. This edition transforms two-dimensional prints into sculptural forms that dynamically engage with light and space. Each piece features gradient hues created with spectrum paint, adding depth and fluidity as colors shift subtly across the folds. The folded structures hold self-supporting shapes, highlighting the interaction between geometry and light.
Throughout the project, various paper types and translucency levels were tested to explore how material qualities impact color and perception. Experiments included printing on translucent films, tracing paper, and other materials to observe how different opacities and surface textures affect visual depth and light transmission. Black Plike paper was ultimately chosen for this edition for its smooth surface, which enhances the intensity of the spectrum gradients and provides a striking contrast to the vibrant colors.
Because of the unique geometry of each piece, the visual experience shifts depending on the viewer’s angle. The spectrum paint’s reflective properties amplify this effect, offering an interactive viewing experience that changes under different lighting conditions. As light reflects off the folds and gradient hues, the piece reveals new facets and forms, adding a dynamic, immersive quality.
During the residency at the Centre for Print Research (CFPR), Stellaris evolved through rigorous exploration of folding and print techniques, blending traditional screen printing with gradient spectrum paint for striking visual transitions. The work draws inspiration from the “wheel of emotions,” using vibrant hues to evoke distinct moods that shift based on lighting and viewer position.
This edition bridges art and design, inviting viewers to engage with geometry, color, and materiality in sculptural compositions that celebrate the harmony of light and form in a uniquely interactive way.
